CERN operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world allowing physicists and engineers to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. Here’s a brief introduction to some of the key projects of CERN’s Accelerators and Technology Sector:
Projects & Studies with ATS Involvement
Since 2008, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has been at the high energy frontier of particle physics. As Long Shutdown 3 approaches in 2026, the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade will take its place. Starting operations in 2029, HL-LHC will continue exploration of the unknown until 2041. HL-LHC’s successor will be decided in around 2028, with the Future Circular Collider, Muon Collider or Linear Collider under consideration. This could allow us to continue to push humanities understanding of the universe for most of the 21st century.
